Lore & Background

The Spawn of Rovagug is an ancient creature that can lay waste to entire continents if allowed to escape. It is imprisoned at the bottom of the Tenebrous Depths, a massive dungeon that the player character is drawn to through dreams. The dragon Xelliren sends these dreams, claiming he wants the party to defeat the Spawn. However, clues from fallen adventurers reveal that Xelliren had been unintentionally working for the Spawn, luring adventurers to their doom. The Spawn's influence drives adventurers insane as they descend through the dungeon's floors. Once all four insane adventurers are defeated, the party enters a portal to the Spawn's nest. After defeating the Spawn, Xelliren congratulates the party but notes the pattern will likely repeat in several thousand years. If the player gathers enough clues, they can make Xelliren understand the truth; shocked, the dragon disappears and reappears during the fight, attempting to attack the Spawn but ending up mind-controlled instead. After the party defeats the Spawn, Xelliren regains his sanity and congratulates the player for permanently defeating the Spawn.

In Their Own Story

At some point in the main campaign of Pathfinder: Kingmaker, the Baron/Baroness/King/Queen has dreams pointing to a massive dungeon called the Tenebrous Depths. Upon reaching the area, the party encounters a dragon called Xelliren. The dragon explains that he sent the dreams, and that the bottom of the dungeon hosts a Spawn of Rovagug, an ancient creature that can lay waste to entire continents if allowed to escape. As the party descends through the floors of the dungeon, they come across past adventurers who have been driven insane by the Spawn's influence. Once all four have been defeated, the party enters a portal that takes them to the Spawn's nest. Upon defeating the Spawn, the party returns to the surface where Xelliren congratulates them but notes that the pattern will likely repeat in several thousand years. Alternatively, the player can come across clues from the fallen adventurers written while they had not yet succumbed to the Spawn's influence, specifically blaming Xelliren for luring them to the dungeon. With enough clues, the Baron can make Xelliren understand the truth: the dragon had been unintentionally working for the Spawn. Shocked by the revelation, Xelliren disappears and reappears during the party's fight with the Spawn, attempting to attack it but ending up mind-controlled instead. After the party defeats the Spawn, Xelliren regains his sanity and congratulates the player for permanently defeating the Spawn.

Reader's Guide

The Spawn of Rovagug serves as the final boss of the Beneath the Stolen Lands DLC. To reach it, the player must follow dreams pointing to the Tenebrous Depths, then descend through multiple floors, defeating four adventurers driven insane by the Spawn's influence. The party then enters a portal to the Spawn's nest for the final battle. The player can optionally gather clues from the fallen adventurers to reveal that Xelliren was unintentionally working for the Spawn. If enough clues are found, the player can confront Xelliren with the truth, causing him to appear during the fight (though he becomes mind-controlled). Defeating the Spawn permanently ends the threat, with Xelliren congratulating the player. The Spawn's power is described as being able to lay waste to entire continents if allowed to escape.
